Digitizing the Future at Nyari
Until recently, Nyari Mixed Secondary School in Ganze, Kilifi, had never known proper electric power. The few learning tools available depended entirely on chalk and hope. In a county where only about 23% of children attend secondary school, and even fewer complete it, Nyari’s teachers kept going against the odds.

That determination caught the attention of Rare Vrienden Foundation, thanks to a passionate teacher named Will. His story of students studying under unsavory conditions and still dreaming big moved the team to act.
From early 2025 until now, 1st November 2025, the partnership has brought lasting change. The students now own proper school uniforms. Classrooms have clean whiteboards, new textbooks, and a shared laptop and projector for lessons. Most importantly, Nyari has enough solar power for the first time—turning learning into a more interactive and enjoyable activity.
The solar installation at Nyari Mixed Secondary School was successfully completed and is now in active use. The system includes:
Capacity: 3.5 kWp solar PV system
Components: three 440W solar panels, a 5kVA hybrid inverter, charge controller, and 200Ah gel batteries
Functionality: consistent power supply for the ICT lab and lighting for evening study
The ICT Hub development plan is already at an advanced stage. Through the support of Friends of River Rare, the school recently received:
One high-end laptop
One wireless projector
A set of digital revision materials and course books

Shared laptop
Whiteboards for improved learning.
Projector to facilitate digital learning.
The next phase will focus on establishing a fully functional digital learning hub that integrates local curriculum resources and e-learning materials. This initiative aims to boost digital literacy, improve academic performance, and position Nyari as a model school for ICT-driven education in Ganze Constituency.
The impact is visible. Students now show renewed confidence knowing they finally have the same basic tools as other schools. For a community where no student has ever gone on to university, this milestone is more than progress—it’s the start of a new story.
Looking ahead, Rare Vrienden Foundation and Nyari aim to expand the ICT hub, teach digital skills, open access to online learning, and help students prepare for national exams and future careers. With reliable power already in place, the dream is within reach.
But it takes collective effort to make it real. Donors and well-wishers can help equip the ICT lab—funding computers, desks, and training. Each contribution brings Nyari closer to becoming a beacon of rural empowerment in Kilifi.
Together, we can raise the next generation of learners who not only finish school but go further—to college, to university, and to the world beyond.
Be part of Nyari’s transformation. Support Kilifi empowerment through Rare Vrienden Foundation.
