From Learning to Building: The Girls Are Getting to Work
A few weeks ago, a new chapter began for a group of young women (and men) taking part in the carpentry training through Galfundi.
Now, we are beginning to see the first fruits of their hard work.
The training started with the basics. Before heading into practical work, the young men and women have been learning about carpentry tools and equipment, how they are used, and the importance of working safely and accurately. They are also learning about measurements and the careful preparation that comes before making that first cut.
And then comes the exciting part: putting the lessons into practice.
The workshop is now filled with the sounds of work — measuring, marking, sawing and shaping wood. The girls are getting their hands on the tools, learning through practice and gradually becoming more confident with each new task.
There is something special about watching this process unfold. A piece of wood that begins as just a piece of material can, with the right knowledge, patience and skill, become something useful. And along the way, the girls are building something else too: confidence in what they are capable of doing.
This is at the heart of what Galfundi is about. As Rare Vrienden’s vocational programme has grown, the focus has remained on giving young people practical skills that can lead to dignity, independence and real opportunities. Galfundi itself grew from the women’s own skills initiative and has become a registered company, creating new possibilities for its members.
For now, the girls are still learning. There will be mistakes, new challenges and many more hours in the workshop.
But that is part of the journey.
The measurements are being taken. The wood is being cut. The skills are taking shape. And, little by little, so are the futures these young women are building for themselves.
