How Young Women Are Earning Through Tile Installation in Kilifi
In Kilifi County, construction sites have traditionally been seen as spaces for men. Tile installation, in particular, has always been viewed as a technical trade meant for male artisans.
But today, young women trained by GalFundi are changing that narrative, and earning from it.
Many of the girls who join GalFundi come from vulnerable backgrounds. Some dropped out of school due to early pregnancies. Others faced financial hardship and social norms that limited their choices to early marriage or casual labor. Few had ever imagined themselves working in construction.
Through hands-on training in tile installation, that reality changes.
They learn how to prepare surfaces, cut and fix tiles with precision, apply adhesives and grout professionally, and deliver high-quality finishing for kitchens, floors, and bathrooms. What begins as training quickly turns into paid work.
GalFundi does more than train. We connect the girls directly to real client projects across Kilifi. They don’t just practice, they work, and they earn.
Riziki: From Trainee to Top Earner
One of our proud success stories is Riziki, now among the top earners in tile installation.
Riziki joined the program with limited opportunities and little hope for stable income. Today, she works confidently on client sites, known for her neat finishing and professionalism. Her skills have given her consistent income, independence, and renewed confidence.
Riziki is no longer searching for work,
clients are searching for her.
Changing Mindsets, One Tile at a Time
When communities see young women installing tiles in homes and kitchens, perceptions begin to shift. Families start believing in the potential of their daughters. Young girls begin to see new possibilities for their future.
Tile installation has become more than a trade. It is a pathway to dignity.
It is in high demand
It pays well per project
It depends on skill and precision, not physical strength
It offers continuous work opportunities
Most importantly, it gives young women the power to earn for themselves.
At GalFundi, we believe skills are the bridge between poverty and dignity. Through tile installation, young women in Kilifi are crossing that bridge every day — building their future, one tile at a time.
