About

The foundation is named after the Rare River, which flows through Kilifi County, north of the port city of Mombasa. We also support an agricultural project along this river, helping local women who previously had no income. They grow vegetables, sell them to nearby schools, and use some for their families.

What began as a simple education program for university and high school girls has grown into a movement driving opportunity, dignity, and change. Our mission remains clear: to support Kenyan girls from low-income families who excel in primary school, giving them the chance to continue into secondary education and even university. Alongside this, we have expanded into new initiatives that empower communities and build lasting impact.

Through Galfundi—now officially established and strengthened by a partnership with the reputable IMARIKA Foundation—we have extended our reach. New programs include a thriving community poultry project, a coconut yoghurt value chain startup, and the adoption of Nyari Mixed High School, where we are working to digitize learning for the future.

Our “Local Skills” initiative has also grown remarkably. What began in 2024 with painting workshops has, by 2025, translated into real opportunities as many girls continue to secure paid work from their skills. Training in aluminum door and window frame construction has likewise matured, with participants now generating steady income and building small enterprises of their own. These skills are more than training—they are pathways to independence.

We also help families grow their own food by providing seeds, tools, and training in improved farming methods. From supporting small farmers to starting community gardens and encouraging cooperative farming, we are helping households secure their own nutrition and even earn from surplus produce. Together, these efforts strengthen food security while building more resilient communities.

We believe that targeted investments—often not even very large ones—can open doors that would otherwise remain closed. Due to financial constraints in this region (and in much of Africa), many opportunities to improve living standards go untapped. This is especially true for women and girls.

On the "Donate" page, you can see how to contribute. You can sponsor a girl through her high school or university education, which requires annual support for 3 to 4 years throughout her studies. This is particularly important at the start of the academic year. You can also choose to support the Local Skills program or the agricultural project. Every donation—big or small, one-time or recurring—is deeply appreciated.

On the "Our Work" page, you can see exactly how donations have been used since the foundation was established.

As a registered ANBI (Public Benefit Organization), we operate under the supervision of the Dutch Tax Authority, meaning your donations are tax-deductible. Additionally, Triodos Bank monitors our financial transactions.

can define their future, and can change the world."
