Empowered Women in Poultry Farming: Anette’s Story of Commitment and Growth

At the heart of our Empowered Women in Poultry Farming program in Kilifi are women who refuse to settle for survival when growth is possible. Women who remind us that transformation does not always begin with large investments — sometimes, it begins with commitment, discipline, and the willingness to act.

One such woman is Anette.

March, before the workshop.
March, before the workshop.

Anette received her batch of poultry later than most of the women in the program, but from the moment she joined, she showed remarkable determination and initiative. During our March monitoring visit, one thing immediately stood out: she had already gone the extra mile by investing in professional feeders and drinkers for her birds.

That level of seriousness matters.

It showed us that Anette was not simply participating in the program — she was building something she truly believed in.

Following our poultry workshop held on 1st April 2026 together with the county livestock officer, where women were trained on improved poultry management practices, Anette wasted no time implementing what she had learned. She quickly constructed a footbath to improve biosecurity and even concreted the floors of her poultry structure to maintain better hygiene and reduce disease risks.

But she did not stop there.

Our Monitoring & Evaluation officer, Sandra, recently informed us that during her latest visit, Anette had gone a step further again by installing a jiko(stove) to help keep the chicks warm during this rainy season — another practical improvement that increases survival rates and promotes healthier growth.

A jiko for the cold season.

This is the spirit we hope to nurture.

Now, we fully understand that not every woman in the program is in a position to make all the upgrades Anette has made. Every household faces different realities and different financial limitations. But Anette’s story is important because it demonstrates what becomes possible when training is matched with action.

If every participant adopts even half of the commitment and consistency Anette has shown, this program will thrive far beyond expectations.

At Rare Vrienden Foundation, our goal has never been just to distribute poultry. Our mission is to help build resilient women-led livelihoods, strengthen food security, and create long-term economic empowerment within communities.

Women like Anette remind us why this work matters.

They prove that when opportunity meets determination, real transformation begins.
