"I’m standing here by the Indian Ocean. That sounds quite paradisiacal—and it really is.This
is the area where the Rare Friends Foundation is active. The town of Kilifi, nearby, is a kind of center for our operations. It’s roughly located between the larger towns of Malindi and Mombasa, and our work area extends about 40–50 km around Kilifi.
Let me turn for a moment—you can see in the background a reef rising above the beach. That’s where I lived when I was a student, and ever since, my love for Africa, and especially for this region, has remained strong.
So everything we do is, more or less, centered in this area. The girls who are attending high school or university through the support of our sponsors are also largely from this region—not all of them, but most. We’ll be showing more of the local schools in the area.
The irrigation project is about 40–50 kilometers inland from Kilifi—deep in the countryside, where you don’t feel the ocean anymore.
The Local Skills Program, where the girls have learned to paint—the fundi wa rangi, as it’s called in Swahili—is just a few kilometers from here, close to Jonathan’s office.Without him, we wouldn’t have been able to make any of this happen.
So that’s a brief summary of how our work is geographically rooted here."
