Stories of Impact: The Power of Being Seen

In the daily rhythm of managing community programs, tracking milestones, and aligning project logistics, it is easy to look at community development through the lens of spreadsheets and strategy. But every so often, a single moment arrives that collapses the distance between administrative efforts and human lives, reminding us deeply of why we do this work.

Recently, our Project Lead in Kilifi, Jonathan Mativo, received a handwritten letter from one of our sponsored students, Lilian Riziki. Tucked inside the envelope was a piece of lined notebook paper filled with careful blue script.
More Than Sponsorship: A Family Built on Shared Belief
When a child lacks access to education, they lose more than just textbooks and classrooms—they are often separated from a sense of long-term security. Lilian’s choice to address Jonathan as "Dad" underscores a profound truth about the Rare Vrienden framework: field leadership in Kilifi is not merely an operational role. To the children under our program’s umbrella, Jonathan represents stability, mentorship, and unconditional safety.
When we step in to support a student, the transaction extends far beyond paying school fees or catering to immediate material requirements. We are signaling to a young person
that their mind is valuable, their future is worth protecting, and that they do not have to carry the weight of their ambitions entirely alone.
The Ripple Effect of Family Support
Lilian’s closing lines highlight an essential component of community resilience: "I also thank you for helping my sister." True development is never isolated. By ensuring that multiple children within a household have their academic paths secured, the structural financial burden on rural families is significantly alleviated. This gives families room to breathe, to plan, and allows the next generation to break cyclical barriers together rather than forcing one sibling to carry the expectations of an entire home.
A Promise to the Future
Lilian’s letter concludes with a rigorous personal commitment: to work harder, improve her marks, and steadily pursue her goals. This level of intrinsic determination is exactly what your support unlocks. When girls are given a secure foundation, their outlook shifts from immediate survival to long-term realization.
To Lilian, her sister, and every student working diligently within our Kilifi programs—we are immensely proud of your focus. Your determination is the fuel that keeps our foundation moving forward.
And to our global community of partners, donors, and friends: this letter is a direct reflection of your shared commitment. Every story transformed is a milestone we achieve together.
